Special Education Academic Programs

The mission of the Special Education academic program is to prepare knowledgeable, ethical, caring decision makers for students with special educational needs in the context of diverse and inclusive social groups, communities, families, and students. Our goal is to prepare specialists to serve students and families with specific educational needs through assessment and intervention, leadership and collaboration, and clinical application, research, and practice.

Special Education Master's Degree (Online)

The M.S. in Special Education program prepares special education teachers at the graduate level in a cross categorical program with two areas of specialization: high iIncidence special education and low incidence special education. These programs have been approved for special education endorsement by the Kansas State Department of Education.

Master's Degree Checklist

  • Meet with Advisor:
    • Schedule an initial appointment with your assigned advisor and review the Graduate Handbook.
    • At this meeting you will: Prepare your Program of Study for submission to the Graduate School; discuss the Master’s Portfolio guidelines and timeline (receive a copy of the Special Education M.S. Portfolio Guide (PDF); discuss licensure and endorsement options in special education; and prepare a tentative semester-by-semester timeline for taking classes (optional).
  • Special Education Handbook:
    • Review Special Education Handbook (prior to initial meeting with advisor if possible). If you do not have one of these (stapled booklet with lavender cover) you can ask for one in the Departmental Office (369 Bluemont Hall). This handbook covers information regarding endorsement procedures (including application forms, PRAXIS tests and program requirements for both adaptive or functional endorsement along with the requirements for either provisional or full endorsement, etc.) and required classes for your program.
  • Program of Study:
    • Prepare your Program of Study (in consultation with your advisor) and determine who will serve on your committee.
    • Your major advisor will have you sign the Program of Study and obtain the signatures of your committee members and forward it to the Graduate School. You should maintain a copy for your records..
    • If changes need to be made to the Program of Study (e.g., course substitution, change in committee member, etc.), submit a Program/Committee Change Form to the Graduate School. This form can be downloaded from the Graduate School website. And/or consult with your major advisor for preparation and routing for required signatures.
  • Portfolio:
    • Begin collecting and organizing artifacts for your Master’s Portfolio in the Canvas course provided by your advisor. Many of the courses you take as part of your Program of Study will result in a possible artifact for your portfolio (see course syllabi and consult with course instructor if you have questions). Practica are also key points where you will have natural opportunity to participate in activities and collect artifacts of your work that will be appropriate for your portfolio. Follow the Portfolio Guide and discuss with your advisor and/or practicum University Supervisor if you have specific questions.
  • Mid-Program Review:
    • Schedule a mid-program review with your advisor to discuss progress toward endorsement (provisional and full) and initial review of your portfolio artifacts.
  • Program Completion Requirements:
    • Notify advisor the semester before you plan to complete your program to confirm that all requirements have been met and to assure necessary timelines can be met. Your advisor will confirm with you the date of the exit portfolio review and discuss necessary paperwork to be completed and important dates you need to be aware of.
    • At the beginning of the semester you plan to graduate, schedule an appointment with your advisor to discuss specific portfolio guidelines and timelines you will need to meet to complete the portfolio.
    • Submit the "Approval to Schedule Final Examination" Form signed by the major professor, department head, and all committee members to the Graduate School 10 working days prior to the portfolio review. The Graduate School will send an email to you whether or not the degree requirements have been satisfied. Note: Deadlines to graduate are published for each semester on the Graduate School website. You must be enrolled the semester you submit your portfolio and graduate.
    • Submit portfolio no later than 2 weeks prior to portfolio exam date.
  • Portfolio:
    • Culminating Portfolio Review (this is a date set by the Department each semester)
    • Your advisor will submit the final ballot to the Graduate School after the supervisory committee has signed.
  • Graduation:
    • Submit Diploma Information Form online to confirm name on diploma and address where diploma should be sent.
    • Pay graduation fees to the Cashier's Office in Anderson Hall.
    • Attend commencement. Deadlines to be met and information about commencement are available on the Graduate School website.
  • Endorsement:
    • Apply for endorsement the semester in which you plan to graduate. Forms are available in the Center for Student Success and Professional Services office, Bluemont Hall Room 013.

Special Education Doctorate (Ed.D.)

The Ed.D. in Special Education prepares personnel for educational and leadership roles in special education in both K-12 and higher education settings.

Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder Graduate Certificate (Online)

This certificate program extends the training of graduate students who have either already completed a M.S. degree in special education or who are currently enrolled in the M.S. program in special education at KSU and wish to add the autism certificate. The central goal of the certificate program in autism is to provide special education teachers with understanding and skills to provide special education programs for students with autism.

Endorsements for Licensure

High Incidence and Low Incidence Special Education (Elementary or Secondary) Endorsements

The special education endorsement can be granted to a person who holds a valid Kansas Professional Teaching License for the level (i.e., elementary or secondary) of special education preparation. The endorsement programs for high incidence or low incidence special education may lead to a master’s degree. At least half of the credits required for special education endorsement must be earned at K-State, including at least one major course and one practicum, before the College of Education may recommend for special education endorsement.
