Project KANCO

Project KANCO is a College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) with sites at Kansas State University, Garden City Community College, and Colorado State University, Pueblo. CAMP provides students from migrant and seasonal farm work backgrounds assistance in completing their freshman year of college and continuing to graduation. The project is a five year grant funded by the Office of Migrant Education, a division of the U.S. Department of Education.

Our Vision is: "To improve the quality of life for farm-workers through education."

50 high school seniors from Kansas and Colorado are recruited annually to attend one of the three sites where they are provided with support services, including:

  • Sponsorship money to assist with the costs of tuition, fees, housing, and other education-related expenses. 
  • Academic counseling services provided by CAMP staff. 
  • Access to tutoring for assistance in the successful completion of coursework and preparation for exams.
  • Career exploration and study skill seminars, provided in weekly CAMP meetings and other University programs.
  • Emotional and social support, provided in a family-like atmosphere, through CAMP seminars, peer mentoring, and CAMP advising.
  • Opportunities for integration into college life by linking students to a number of campus resources designed to help them succeed.
  • Involving students in celebrations, cultural events, and University activities.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Participation in the Migrant Education Program (MEP).
  • Employment in a migrant or seasonal farm for at least 75 days within the past 24 months is required for either the student or their parents.
  • Students must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Students may not have more than 30 college credit hours by the time of application.
  • U.S. citizenship or legal residency is required. Must be admitted to a KANCO institution (Kansas State University, Garden City Community College, or Colorado State University, Pueblo).
