Editorial: A Time to Give Thanks |
| |
| In the fall of the year many cultures observe holidays and ceremonies for the purpose of “giving thanks”. Although 2005 seems to have been marked by many tragedies around the globe, these struggles sometimes help me to appreciate the opportunities and privileges that we have been given. This year, I had the privilege of working with my peers to create volume six of the Journal of Educational Computing, Design and Online Learning (JECDOL). For those of you who are not familiar with how this student oriented and operated journal came to be, here is a quick history.
Dr. Diane McGrath, started the JECDOL project to provide graduate students interested in educational technology a forum for sharing their ideas, research and developing the skills necessary for researching, writing and working with professional journals. Dr. McGrath continues to serve as the faculty advisor for JECDOL. Each year she chooses an editor who in turn chooses an editorial board, who in turn review the articles submitted by their peers for publication. This year I was given the honor to serve as editor of JECDOL and I was fortunate to have a hard working and knowledgeable editorial board to review articles as well as a diverse pool of submissions.
The articles that appear in this edition of JECDOL range dramatically in topic and style, they do however, have one thing in common: each article is an indirect tribute to Dr. McGrath. The articles were written for her classes, written with her encouragement, written with her guidance and written with an enthusiasm and body of knowledge that she has fostered in each of the respective authors. JECDOL is a long lived project of problem solving and problem-based learning. It is an authentic task created for a critical audience. It is an educational activity that encourages students to apply what they have learned and collaborate with their peers to produce an educational artifact of high quality.
As many of you know, this fall Dr. McGrath submitted her application to become a full professor in the College of Education at Kansas State University. At the time that JECDOL went to press, or more accurately, to the Web, Dr. McGrath’s promotion was still under review. In the opinion of her students, Dr. McGrath is deserving of the title of full professor. Her work with students on projects such as JECDOL embodies her commitment to student learning. Thank you Dr. McGrath, and thanks to all of the reviewers, the web technician and all of the authors who have made this issue of JECDOL possible.
