New
Horizons is designed to improve teacher preparedness
in the targeted high need/low performing schools by providing professional
development in two ways.
New
Horizons
has instituted a professional development program that will lead to
Bilingual Education (BE)/English second language (ESL) endorsement
at the graduate level for in-service teachers. The professional development
program translates into approximately 15 hours of course work designed
specifically to address the professional development needs of school
educators who are serving the needs of ELL students.
New
Horizons will
strengthen the capacity of current BE/ESL endorsed educators by providing
extended professional development training in the Sheltered Instruction
Observation Protocol (SIOP) model. The SIOP model provides teachers
with 1) important guidelines for planning sheltered English instructional
lessons; 2) effective instructional strategies for ELL students within
the mainstream classroom; and 3) a resource to improve the level of
instruction for ELL students within the mainstream classroom.
