Project Needs

  • Build upon practitioners' current foundation of basic skills, knowledge and areas of expertise
  • Increase teachers' knowledge and skills through successful professional development
  • Offer opportunities for practicing new skills, strategies and techniques, provide feedback on performance and ensure continued follow-up
  • Link activities to measurable outcomes in student performance, behavior and/or achievement.

Project Statistics

  • Ninety-five percent of ELL students tested at the eleventh grade level in the three districts scored in the Unsatisfactory or Basic categories of the Kansas Reading Assessment in 2000 and did not meet minimum standards of performance.
  • English proficient students scored an average of 81 points while ELL students scored 64.
  • The dropout rate for Hispanic ELL students is 77% (KS Advisory on Hispanic Affairs, 2000)
