M.S. in Academic Advising

The Master of Science in Academic Advising is designed for advising professionals and future professional advisors seeking to enhance their knowledge and ability to work more effectively with postsecondary students in their academic and career planning. The master’s program was developed in collaboration with the National Academic Advising Association. The master’s degree in Academic Advising is a 30-hour program and all courses are offered online. The content of the master’s program is consistent with the CAS (Council for the Advancement of Standards) Standards and Guidelines for Academic Advising Programs.

Student Learning Outcomes:
The learning outcomes for the Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising apply to students in the MS in Academic Advising program. The following are additional student learning outcomes addressed in the program's assessment of student learning plan:

  1. Students will demonstrate effective listening skills followed by appropriate verbal and nonverbal responses and interventions in their advising.
  2. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the unique challenges and needs of college student-athletes and resources to address these.
  3. Students will demonstrate understanding of accessibility issues for persons with disabilities.

Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising

The Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising is designed to prepare students for positions as academic advisors in college and university settings and to provide additional skills and knowledge for advisors already in the field of academic advising. The 15-hour graduate certificate program was developed in collaboration with the National Academic Advising Association. The content of the program is consistent with the CAS (Council for the Advancement of Standards) Standards and Guidelines for Academic Advising Programs. All courses in the program are delivered online.

Student Learning Outcomes:
The student learning outcomes addressed in the program's assessment of student learning plan follow:

  1. Know and apply academic advising strategies and approaches to assist students in achieving academic success and to enhance academic advising programs.
  2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of how to apply student development theories in college and university settings.
  3. Students will demonstrate knowledge of career development theories and related constructs.
