Literacy Education
Area: Elementary Education
Position: Two Assistant Professors (tenure-track, 9 month positions)
Starting Date: August 2008
Responsibilities:
1. Teach and supervise preservice teachers in elementary literacy methods
2. Collaborate with Professional Development School partners in the elementary teacher preparation program
3. Teach graduate courses in the reading endorsement program and/or teach graduate courses in literacy
4. Advise graduate students in curriculum and instruction
5. Engage in research and scholarship in reading, language arts, and literacy
6. Participate in service activities at the local, state, and national levels
7. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees
Necessary Qualifications:
1. Earned doctorate in education with emphasis in reading or literacy by the first day of employment
2. At least three years of elementary teaching experience in an accredited school in the United States
3. Ability to work collaboratively with Professional Development School (PDS) partners in a field-based elementary teacher preparation program
4. Ability to collaborate with colleagues in the department, the College of Education, and departments in the College of Arts and Sciences
5. Potential and commitment to conduct and publish research
6. Interest in and willingness to design and teach distance-delivered graduate classes
7. Ability to integrate issues of technology into all classes
Preferred Qualifications:
1. University teaching experience in a teacher education program with a field-based component
2. Experience with diverse populations
3. Interest and ability in obtaining external funding
4. Evidence of service beyond the classroom
Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications

The vision of the College of Education at Kansas State University is “preparing educators to be knowledgeable, ethical, and caring decision makers." This position, along with all positions in the College of Education, is directly responsible for advancing this vision and that of the Department of Educational Leadership.
The Department of Educational Leadership is one of four departments in the College of Education. The department provides graduate-level programs in adult education and educational administration. The successful candidate for this position will be a member of the Faculty of Adult Education and will support the MS, EdD, and PhD degree programs in adult education.
The faculty of adult education conducts a large masters and doctoral cohort program in conjunction with the United States Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The faculty also teaches on-ground courses in Kansas City and Wichita; courses for special audiences; and selected mediated courses throughout Kansas. The successful candidate will be initially assigned to support the department’s programs at Fort Leavenworth and will teach at the department’s other locations or via distance learning on an as-needed basis, and will carry out a program of scholarly research and service appropriate to a Research I land grant university.
Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate in adult education from a regionally accredited university; have recent fulltime classroom instructional experience at the masters and doctoral levels in both military and civilian settings; have recent experience teaching two or more graduate-level core courses in adult education such as Introduction to Adult Education, Program Planning, Characteristics of the Adult Learner, and Social Foundations of Adult Education; and hold scholarly credentials sufficient for immediate appointment to the graduate faculty at Kansas State University.
Preferred Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have experience in developing and using teaching-related technology in a higher education setting; have experience teaching core and advanced graduate-level courses in a subspecialty area in the field of adult education; have experience in developing innovative graduate-level programs for educators of adults; have a willingness to develop distance courses; and have experience in working with populations of diverse adult graduate students.
